Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and a loss of interest in pleasurable activities. MDD can come alone, or it can also include manic episodes along with depression.
Depression with manic episodes is called bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that results in intense changes in mood, energy levels, thinking patterns, and behavior.
MDD can present in a number of ways, including the following symptoms:
⦁ Appetite changes
⦁ Sleep disturbances
⦁ Reduced cognitive abilities, such as poor memory or word searching
⦁ Suicidal thoughts
⦁ Emotional numbness
⦁ Physical problems, such as headaches, chronic pain, and inflammation
⦁ Persistently low or depressed mood
⦁ Anhedonia, a decreased interest in activities you enjoy
⦁ Lack of energy
⦁ Lack of motivation
⦁ Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
⦁ Feeling of helplessness and/or hopelessness
⦁ Poor concentration
Bipolar Disorder includes the above symptoms but may also include the following symptoms of mania:
⦁ Feeling overly happy or elated
⦁ Talking rapidly or racing speech
⦁ Decreased need for sleep
⦁ Increase in reckless behavior
⦁ Increased activity, energy, or agitation
⦁ Racing thoughts
⦁ Increase in goal-directed activities
